It was a dazzling, glamorous, five-star party---the kind you never see anymore, alas---and this is the way the invitation read: "Glitter, Stardust, Swish, Swing---It's A Roaring Twenties Thing. Come White Tie And Tails. Come Flapper Dress All. For Alexandra's Birthday Ball."

Alexandra is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert W. Miller of the duty free shop Millers, who gave this gorgeous gala to celebrate her 21st birthday. She is one of the three Miller daughters, all beauties, and most of the 220 guest dancing their Twenties slippers off(and spats, if you please) at the Rainbow Room were young and very beautiful, too, and dressed to the Twenties hilt in flapper finery and white tie. These glorious young things had made a great effort, shopping all around town for headbands, saucy little hats, feathers, cigarette holders and way above the knees dresses, marcelling their hair short and knocking themselves out to be authentic. Some had their dresses made; other, including Arietta Livanos, bought theirs at thrift shops. The boys who didn't have their tails rented them for the evening. It was so much........
